And the protagonist is a woman nameed is Oedipa Maas. 

I think it was made up specifically for the novel, and stems from Oedipus, the King of thebes in greek litertaure who married his mother and killed his father.

 Update- brief news piece from Septmber 7th on Tony which discusses how he phoned Colin Geddes (organiser of the Midnight Madness film festival) to express his grattitude for screening Ong Bak. 

Tony Jaa, the break-out star of Ong Bak, a Thai martial-arts film, called Geddes long distance right after the screening to express, in broken English, his tearful and undying gratitude (definitely a guy you want in your corner).
